HOW WORKING IN MY GARDEN REMINDED ME OF A TEACHABLE MOMENT

And forget not that the earth delights to feel your
bare feet and the wind longs to play with your hair.

 IN THE GARDEN

It was a beautiful spring day – sunny, 70s, blue sky, green grass. I was outside enjoying the day, listening to the birds sing, and weeding my small flower garden. Among all the weeds there were several ants, who were very upset that I was there, and a few earthworms. And seeing those earthworms reminded me of a teachable moment I once had.

 A TEACHABLE MOMENT

Now, current and former teachers know what a teachable moment is; but for those of you who don’t know, let me explain. A teachable moment is one that’s not in the day’s lesson plan. It’s an opportunity that arises out of nowhere and you seize the moment to teach something important to your students. Such was one rainy morning in the late 90s as I walked into school. It was very wet and there was a ginormous earthworm (i.e. “teachable moment”) laying on the sidewalk; so I picked it up and carried it inside. I always enjoyed sharing nature with my students and stressing to them their important part in taking care of it.

Well, I gathered the 1st and 2nd graders around the table and brought out the large earthworm. There were lots of oohs and ahhs while I explained that even though it was just a worm, it was a living creature and we needed to treat it with the utmost care. As I held the delicate thing at both ends, stretching it out to show its huge size, you can guess what happened. IT BROKE IN HALF!! And you can imagine what came next -
“Ohhh, Mrs. Eskridge you killed the worm!!!”
“You said we were supposed to be kind to it!”
     “It’s DEAD!!” etc.
Even a few tears were shed while I tried to explain that the worm was NOT dead. Worms were special and could survive because they can regenerate their bodies. The rest of the day was definitely not as eventful or memorable. So much for teachable moments – ha, ha!

 THE ART

Note: I am a Design Team member for The Crafter's Workshop; however, even though I use and love their products, all opinions are solely my own. #ad #advertising #sponsor

I used some purple and blue in this week's art. This spread with the woman makes me think she might be going to the Royal Wedding. What do you think?
