LET TIME BE YOUR COMPANION NOT YOUR PREDATOR

Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives. But I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey and reminds us to cherish every moment because they'll never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we've lived. After all, Number One, we're only mortal.

 THIS IS THE FARTHEST AWAY

On the last day of school as the buses pulled away, my friend, and former teacher, Bob had a habit of saying, “Well, this is the farthest away from the first day of school that we’re going to be.” And with that, the clock would start to tick the minutes away from my summer vacation. The 5,000 items on my “to do” list would begin screaming, “Me first! Me, first!!” Instead of relaxing and enjoying each day, I would mentally be counting the days left. “Oh no, it’s the end of June, and the 4th of July is next week.” “It can’t be time for the fair already, school will be starting soon!” I was thinking of time in large chunks.

Do you do that? Take a minute and think of the times you’ve watched time run away from you; or when you’ve wished time away. My niece just finished her junior year of high school and when I asked her how it felt to be a senior, she told me she couldn’t wait to graduate and go to college. You know when you’re young, you feel like you have an exponential amount of time ahead of you and it’s so easy to wish days, even years, away and still have plenty to spare.

 BUZZY WHIR

The other day I was standing in my garden, contemplating where to place the next plant, and I heard a loud buzzy whir go past me. Thinking it was a large bee, I was pleasantly surprised to see a female hummingbird hovering at eye level about five feet away from me. As she was trying to decide if I was a flower, I was as stiff as a statue thinking “Wow, this is so great!” At this stage in my life, I try not to think in huge chunks like Bob did. Instead, I think about each and every day; and what is special about each one. Take your time people, life goes fast enough.
